You don't think the Metro would have decided to form a football conference?


FWIW in 1990 Raycom did a feasibility study for the Metro Conference about the Metro forming a super conference. It was never clear whether the study included football or not. Below is the proposed divisions

North: BC, Cincy, Pitt, Rutgers, Syracuse, Temple, VT, and WVU

South: ECU, FSU, L'ville, Memphis, Miami, South Carolina, So. Miss, and Tulane

Even if some of the schools decided to remain an Independent in football and a member of a conference for the other sports (i.e. the Big East schools) or South Carolina decided to still join the SEC, the Metro could still have enough participating members to sponsor football particularly if UAB, USF, UCF, maybe UNC-Charlotte, and maybe Georgia State were included in the mix.
